Preview, Tips and Best Bets for Doomben Wednesday, May 24

Big fields in most races at this Doomben midweek and with the rail out 6.5

Big fields in most races at this Doomben midweek and with the rail out 6.5 metres it will pay be on those that can go forward and keep out of strife.

BEST BET: A CALL FROM HEAVEN (Race 7 No 2)

NEXT BEST: HILLCREST AVENUE (Race 4 No 9)

VALUE BET: RIPPER SHANK (Race 2 No 10)

Quaddie numbers are:

Race 5: 2,5,10,11

Race 6: 4,6,12

Race 7: 2,8,10

Race 8: 3,12

72 combinations

Race 1- Maiden Plate 1640m

Plenty of these have multiple convictions and just as many have been knocking on the door at recent starts.

Kelly Schweida has put Jim Orman on ENCOMPASS (5) which wasn't helped by a wide gate and got too far back over 1800m at Eagle Farm. He has been close-up at all three outings and the drop back in trip won't hurt. From a good gate he can box seat and there will be no excuses

HOUSTON ROCKET (7) is another that hasn't done much wrong placing at all four starts to date. He steps up in trip but his pedigree suggests that will be no problem. He was hitting the line at Eagle Farm and can do the same with Damien Thornton.

Jack Bruce cannot be ignored and whilst NICE WATER (4) has a few convictions and was well beaten at the Sunshine Coast he was making ground late. The extra distance may be what he needs and a positive ride will help.

FINE AND RARE (6) has some speed and with Michael Murphy could go forward and set his own tempo. He is improving with racing and could defy them all.

Verdict- ENCOMPASS (5) ticks the boxes.

Race 2- Maiden Plate 1200m

Plenty of professional placegetters in this.

Blinkers come off RIPPER SHANK (10) which has been improved by two outings and Tony Gollan doesn't put Ryan Maloney on for nothing. He has less convictions than most and from a good gate there will be no excuses.

DEEP CLEAN (11) disappointed when favourite at Eagle Farm. His previous form was sound and blinkers can make a difference.

CASSIMIR (5) has been runner-up at four of his seven starts. He has had two quiet trials, gets a tongue-tie and Kelly Schweida has turned to his old mate Jim Orman to get the job done.

DARK HARMONY (6) has placed at eight of ten starts and was never on the track when resuming at Ipswich. A better gate helps and with Ben Thompson he can find a placing again.

Verdict- Some value with RIPPER SHANK (10).

Race 3- Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate 1350m

Saturday form is hard to ignore in a Maiden and BETTCHA THE CROWN (1) took on winners when placing at Eagle Farm in Open Three-Year-Old company. Desleigh Forster has put Jim Orman on and that will be enough to overcome the wide draw.

FREDDIE (5) has been around the mark at both outings since joining Jack Bruce. He has copped a bad gate again but Samantha Collett stays on and knows what to do.

QUEENSWAY (15) was making late ground on debut and will appreciate the extra distance. She would prefer a bigger track but Angela Jones stays on and may have more upside than most of these.

HELL APPROACHING (6) has been stepped up in trip after finding one better at his past two outings. He has been hitting the line and the extra distance may be what he needs.

Verdict- BETCHA THE CROWN (1) has the Saturday form.

Race 4- Benchmark 78 Handicap 2040m

A case can be made for nearly every runner in this but Saturday form is always a good benchmark. HILLCREST AVENUE (9) is fitter for three outings and was beaten less than a length in a Benchmark 85 last start. He does things wrong and Stuart Kendrick has taken the blinkers off and put a tongue-tie on. The extra distance will suit and with a good tempo likely Tyler Marshall can box seat and have the last crack.

APPLICATIONS (4) returns to midweek company after some bold front-running efforts in Saturday grade. A firm track tests him but will find this easier and give a sight for a long way.

WITHOUT REVENGE (2) is getting up to his right trip and was on the speed before fading in the same race as HILCREST AVENUE (9). He meets him 3kg worse but won here last preparation and Damien Thornton will have him well placed throughout.

MISSY MOOLA (6) disappointed at Ipswich but drops 5.5kg and gets blinkers. With Jim Orman replacing Adan Hyeronimus she can go forward and be prominent for a long way.

Verdict- HILLCREST AVENUE (9) is ready to win.

Race 5- Class 4 Plate 1050m

Veterinary issues have prevented a few of these from reaching their potential and RICH LISTER (10) had an aborted campaign last preparation. She resumes on the back of a strong trial, has won first-up previously and is well placed with Cejay Graham's 3kg claim. A Saturday grader when right she only needs to bring that form to be hard to beat.

LUSKIN HERO (2) has promised more than delivered but is another with veterinary issues a factor and is smart when right. He too won a recent trial, has a good record when fresh and has succeeded at this trip previously. With Angela Jones 1.5kg claim he can make his presence felt.

INASEC (11) got the job done at Toowoomba and whilst this is harder has fitness on her side. From a good gate with Ben Thompson she will be hard to pass.

ALLUSIONIST (5) is now a stablemate of RICH LISTER (10) and brings consistent form though is more a placegetter than a winner. A good gate helps and he showed he is ready to go with a recent trial win.

Verdict- RICH LISTER (10) is well treated at the weights.

Race 6- Class 1 Handicap 1200m

Question marks over many of these but blinkers go back on MINTAKA LAD (4) which struggled when odds-on favourite at the Sunshine Coast. Ryan Maloney partners up again with his old pal David Vandyke and from a good gate will be the one to run down.

LADY MASQUERADE (6) has had a break after just missing the placings in a Saturday Three-Year-Old last start. She won on debut at big odds after a quiet trial and could replicate the deed here.

SNOW BOUM (12) disappointed at Toowoomba but may not have appreciated the undulating track. She has trialled since and with Ben Thompson has the speed to overcome a bad gate.

I AM MASON (1) was backed as if unbeatable on debut but won it in the stewards room. He will find this harder and rises 1.5kg but from gate one with Jim Orman will get every chance.

Verdict- Nothing would surprise but I am on MINTAKA LAD (4).

Race 7- Benchmark 65 Handicap 1640m

Staying with A CALL FROM HEAVEN (2) which showed she could run this trip holding them all off at Ipswich last start. With Cejay Graham's 3kg claim she carries only 0.5kg more in similar class and from gate one will be in control throughout

DAUVENAY (8) was caught wide and didn't enjoy the track at Toowoomba last start. That was her first run in seven weeks and whilst she failed to flatter at her only previous start here there were excuses. She gives them a start but Andrew Mallyon knows what to do and will have her hitting the line.

VILLADEN (10) brings Sydney form and has won first-up previously. Chris Waller brings them North to get a result and whilst longer may be better a good gate and Jim Orman warrant consideration.

PICK ZA BEANS (16) took a long time to get going but hit the line late at Ipswich last start. Samantha Collet stays on and will be rounding them up over the final stages.

Verdict- A CALL FROM HEAVEN (2) can deliver again.

Race 8- Benchmark 68 Handicap 1350m

Dropping back from Saturday grade will help the THE RACKETEER (3) which was poleaxed when in a prominent position in a strong Three-Year-Old race last start. His New Zealand Group 2 form is up to this grade and with Cejay Graham's claim can make his own luck.

RING OF STEEL (12) has won two of three starts this time in and held them off at Ipswich last start. The longer trip from a wide gate poses some concerns but if anyone can Jim Orman can.

PERCEPTIVE (14) got too far back from a wide gate when resuming at Ipswich. He drops 5kg, this trip suits and from a better gate with Angela Jones can figure in the finish.

CENTRESTONE (13) is resuming after showing promise last preparation. He may want longer but his recent trial was sound and Ben Thompson will have him well placed throughout.

Verdict- THE RACKETEER (3) can make his own luck.
